Where We Work    Middle East and North Africa

Middle East and North Africa

Endemic conflict, political instability, and human displacement continue to pose profound risks to young people in the Middle East and North Africa. Advancing global opportunity, integrating youth into the global economy, supporting the right of children to participate, and building a generation of engaged, globally connected citizens are not merely investments in young people – they are investments in peace, justice, and a sustainable future.

Middle East and North Africa

For sustainable growth and lasting peace

Endemic conflict, political instability, and human displacement continue to pose profound risks to young people in the Middle East and North Africa. Advancing global opportunity, integrating youth into the global economy, supporting the right of children to participate, and building a generation of engaged, globally connected citizens are not merely investments in young people – they are investments in peace, justice, and a sustainable future.

More than one in four children in the Middle East and North Africa face extreme poverty, and with it, limited access to educational opportunity, health and sanitation, and adequate nutrition. Progress in this region depends on unlocking the engagement, dynamicism, and potential of its record generation of young people. With access to global education and integration into the global economy, they can lead the integration of impoverished communities into the global economy and construct more sustainable and less resource-dependent economic systems. They can connect isolated communities to the rest of the world, to the benefit of all people, young and old. Empowered as community leaders and civic participants, they can uphold stronger political systems, stem radicalization, advance peace and security aims, and take further action on the environment. However, not nearly enough has been done to empower children and youth in this role. High youth unemployment, insufficient investment in education and global education, and disparate economic growth combine to perpetuate poverty, encourage radicalization, and potentially destabilize societies across the Middle East and North Africa.

Ongoing security challenges exacerbate the impact of these issues. While progress has been made in the last decade to close ethnic and sectarian divides and endemic conflicts, the region continues to see some of the world’s deadliest conflicts and most pressing humanitarian challenges – challenges that impact the lives and futures of children most. Children and youth are central to ending these conflicts, promoting tolerance, and closing these divides.

In partnership with local affiliates, governments, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders, the IAYG family is working to change the narrative on children & youth in the Middle East and North Africa. Young people hold the key to a future of sustainable growth, lasting peace, and shared prosperity. Our extensive commitments across the region work to unlock that potential – to the benefit of communities in the region and the world.
